IMPORTANCE OF ELECTROCARDIOGRAM (ECG): It provides information on heart rate, rhythm, and intracardiac conduction. A frequent cause of arrhythmias is primary cardiovascular disease, but other systemic abnormalities may directly cause or contribute to arrhythmias (non-cardiac diseases).
Arrhythmias are usually very fast or very slow and can occur with or without underlying heart disease.

IMPORTANCE OF BLOOD PRESSURE MEASUREMENT: Blood Pressure is determined by cardiac output and systemic vascular resistance. Hypertension is the most important cardiovascular disease of the aged cat and potential etiologies of secondary hypertension (dogs and cats) include chronic and acute renal disease, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, hyperadrenocorticism, pheochromocytoma, diabetes mellitus and even obesity.

Signs of hypertension include: acute blindness, ocular hemorrhage, dilated pupils, retinal detachment, swollen and small kidneys, hematuria, epistaxis, seizures, disorientation, ataxia, hemi or paraparesis, nystagmus, cardiac murmurs, PU/PD, palpable thyroid gland among others.
